Elisabeth Luce Moore Preserve

About the Elizabeth Luce Moore Preserve
Part of a 75-acre estate once owned by the sister of Henry Luce, founder of Time-Life, the preserve sits on a hillside overlooking the Saugatuck River. Easy-to-follow trails, steep in places, lead hikers through wetlands and stands of old-growth oak, past a freely flowing spring, and around the remains of a tennis court where prominent guests once played. The hike takes approximately 45 minutes at a moderate pace.

The house and surrounding grounds remained in the Moore family after the preserve was donated. In 2011, the Land Trust received a federal grant to remove invasive plants from the property. The current owners of the adjacent estate continue to help keep invasive plants in check on a portion of the property.

Historical Note: The first significant migration of outsiders to Weston began in the late 1920s and continued through the 1930s, as the town became a haven for prominent creative people such as artists, sculptors, writers and editors, actors, and musicians. The arrival of these highly talented, educated, and successful residents marked the end of Weston’s era as a small, simple farming community.

Directions & Parking: 
North on Lyons Plain Road.  Make a hard left onto Davis Hill Road, then left again on Hill Farm Road. Park on the left side, opposite the preserve entrance.

There is a pedestrian entrance on Davis Hill Road across from Martin Road.
